Bring your campers to Fort Johnson to explore the salt marsh and Charleston Harbor! Older children will go on the E/V Discovery boat while younger students participate in exploratory programs on land.
Programs:
5-9 years old* will visit these three stations:
Salt Marsh Field Study:
Join us for a muddy trek through the marsh to explore its importance and biodiversity. Children will be marine biologists using quadrats to investigate the plants and animals that call the marsh home. They will learn about adaptations of these organisms and human impacts on the salt marsh.
Touch Tank
Children will get up close and personal with animals that live in Charleston Harbor. We will observe the adaptations that these animals have to survive in the estuary.
How to Read a Fish
Cast your interest this way as we explore the exciting world of fish. Join us as we examine fishes' body shape and behaviors that make them unique. Discover the ancient Asian method of documenting fish size, Gyotaku! We will use fish and fish stamps to make colorful prints of estuarine fish.

10-18 years old will spend the morning...
Discovery Vessel Program:
*35 passenger capacity* at least one adult per group
Students collect water quality data and sample marine organisms that are collected by a trawl net during the vessel program. There will be an investigation into the organisms’ form and function while identifying them. Students learn about local conservation issues and benefits of the estuary while developing critical science investigation skills.
These programs will be held at the Fort Johnson Marine Resources Complex (located on James Island, SC). Please meet our staff at the Marshlands House. Drive 1/4 mile past the gate to the Marine Resources Complex (217 Ft. Johnson Rd. Charleston, SC 29412) and look for the Marshlands House on your left.
